Attending OHUG in Las Vegas last month was educational and full of smart folks, as it always is. In particular, I noticed talent management and its HCM-related integrations generated a lot of buzz. People are looking for a low-cost, quick time-to-value way to do this without having to go whole hog on wholesale system upgrades.

To that point, did you know that Oracle provides easily-configurable integrations from Enterprise ePerformance 9.1 to Human Resources 9.0 applications? The same is true for Enterprise Learning Management 9.1.

Most folks we talk to are unaware of this.

In fact, by the end of this year it is expected that integrations to both HCM 9.0 and 8.9 will be available for the following 9.1 applications:

PeopleSoft Enterprise ePerformance

PeopleSoft Enterprise Learning Management

PeopleSoft Enterprise Career and Succession Planning

PeopleSoft Enterprise eCompensation Management Desktop

PeopleSoft Enterprise Recruiting Solutions

You might not be in a position to upgrade your entire HCM suite immediately, but have a need for the enhanced functionality offered by one of these 9.1 applications. That’s what makes these integration capabilities so cool.

Incidentally — yes, consultants have been doing this kind of customization for years! But now it’s delivered. And that’s a huge plus for many companies.

Check out the PeopleSoft Talent Management 9.1 to PeopleSoft HCM Integration Statement of Direction. It likely provides all the detail you need – and many ways to engage Oracle if you’re interested in exploring this further.

Naturally, given that I’m a consultant who lives and breathes this stuff, if you have any other questions about this or anything PeopleSoft — whether you’re looking at a project big or small — please email me and I’ll be glad to help.

Something I find many folks don’t know, at least on one level or another: most of today’s business intelligence (BI) solutions have been designed and built with integration into Microsoft Office in mind. Arguably, Excel is the main medium to which most BI information is exported (or in some cases, it can be the BI tool unto itself), so it’s logical that these integrations are essential to any strategic BI platform. Really, no longer is a full integration with Microsoft Office a differentiator – it should be required functionality.

However, even though MS Office integration is now fairly prevalent in most of the main BI solutions, this technology still tends not to be taken advantage of in the ways it was intended. There is much unrealized potential related to this integration and most of it is the result of a lack of training or education.

MS Office integration is bisynchronous, meaning you can initiate BI from the appropriate Office product or you can export from a dedicated BI tool to an Office product. In too many cases (and this truly saddens the hardcore BI wonk in me), the two-way integration for end users simply means there is a nice little button in their Office task bar that they can click to get access to the BI solution and run a report. Put another way, instead of starting in BI and exporting to Excel, the user starts in Office and accesses BI via a basic GUI integration. In this scenario there really isn’t much difference between the two and the advantages of this integration are essentially lost; it’s good for marketing feature bullet lists and not much else.

But there’s so much more to be had. Let’s take a moment and explore a basic example that would harness more depth of this type of integration.

Let’s say you have to generate monthly presentations for your management team and you use the same PowerPoint template every month. However, each month your data changes and you have to update the numbers within your PPT. This means you have to run your reports, manipulate them and get the data you need, each and every month. You then must manually update the PPT with the new monthly data.

Depending on how extensive the reports are and how many slides you have and how much manipulation you have to conduct, this could take a significant number of hours to accomplish – all for something that’s pretty rote and programmatic. Not only that, but while you’re doing such a task, you just know that this sort of work is exactly what integration and automation were designed to handle.

Well, what if your PPT were automatically integrated with your relevant BI reports that could, in turn, instantly populate the month’s data for your PPT? In this scenario, since only the data changes (not the content or format), you could simply use the integration with MS Office and automatically refresh the BI reports, saving you significant hours of time in preparing your presentation. Additionally, since this avoids the “manual” part of updating, you reduce the potential to introduce errors. The presentation stays the same, you refresh your important reports from your BI tool and the integration with Office does the rest. Easy.

Is this the most powerful feature on Earth? Not even close. But it is often overlooked and downright underutilized. Typically, once I show clients how they can trim a considerable chunk of time from their workflow with this integration, they wonder how they ever lived without it.

As with many things in enterprise technology, the gods live in the details. From simplicity comes power.

In some of my previous blog posts, I have emphasized the importance and real-world value of integration for PeopleSoft customers. Integration is an overused word, but nonetheless lots of concepts and power live within it.

There is no question that an integrated maintenance management system lowers an organization’s risk and costs. What I haven’t really done previously is quantify the value of integration — in other words, put a number on how much money a PeopleSoft customer will really save by using the PeopleSoft Maintenance Management solution instead of a third-party product that must be interfaced and supported.

Here’s my shot at that.

A large city in the Western US that uses PeopleSoft recently posted a bid award for a consulting and support agreement on their website. This particular city uses a third-party maintenance management system.

When I read the bid details, I was surprised to read that this city was spending $300,000 to integrate their third-party maintenance management system to their PeopleSoft procurement system. Three hundred grand, just for integration work. The bid details also mention an additional (but unspecified) amount would be used to pay for ongoing software maintenance and services to support the integration.

If I estimate those costs at 10% of the original integration cost annually, the five-year costs to develop and support the integration between PeopleSoft and third-party maintenance solution is right around $450,000.

I don’t know about you, but when you consider that the cost of integration is for PeopleSoft Maintenance Management customers is zero and there is no additional support and maintenance costs beyond the standard Premium support, I can think of 450,000 reasons why a PeopleSoft customer requiring a maintenance management solution should be looking closely at the PeopleSoft Maintenance Management solution.

That’s one example. I’m sure there are many more.

If companies understood that the PeopleSoft Maintenance Management solution offered functional parity or superiority and massive downstream cost savings when it comes to native integrations into other PeopleSoft FMS modules, people would see this decision (and investigation) differently. In my discussions with clients, when this topic comes up they are shocked at what they learn. Not just about what PeopleSoft Maintenance Management can do, but also how much extraneous dev + maintenance spend they can jettison by sticking with native intra-PeopleSoft integrations.

If any of this sounds like something you’re wrestling with, please email me or give us a call at 800-774-5187. I’d love to help you sort your plans out.

In addition, you can check out Oracle’s website and download some of the collateral related to the product. If you’d like more of an in-depth primer on PeopleSoft MM’s and a deeper explanation of its benefits (especially compared to point solutions), download our free whitepaper entitled PeopleSoft Maintenance Management: An Introduction and Overview of Benefits.
