It’s widely known in foodie circles that if you want to get an immediate read on how good a chef is, ask them to make scrambled eggs. It’s a simple dish very prone to subtle missteps by chefs of all calibers, and these missteps – or absence thereof – will be what determines how good the final product is. The outcome absolutely resides in the details.

As a guy who is slowly learning to cook good food, I can tell you that my scrambled eggs of days past were, in a word, disgusting. I’d routinely overcook them, and you’d wind up looking at a plate of overdone, slightly browned egg mash, usually smashed into approximately eleven thousand separate pieces because I played with them too much. And, to be polite, you’d douse them with a quart of ketchup or Cholula or Frank’s Red Hot or Tabasco, choke them down, and remind yourself never to accept one of my breakfast invites again. You could even put a plate of my eggs in front of a starving animal and it’d smell them, look at you with wide eyes, and choose to die instead.

But all of that has changed since discovering The One True Way.

This method isn’t easy, and it might cause carpal tunnel syndrome, but if you do it right, the eggs will be downright amazing.

This isn’t my method at all. In fact, it’s Gordon Ramsay’s (of Hell’s Kitchen fame) recipe, and it’s a bit different than what you’re probably used to. Instead of writing it down for you, I’ll instead just show you this video.

Once you make these, you’ll never go back to your old way. Basically because anyone you serve Ramsay’s eggs to won’t let you.

In other news, here are some links for you to peruse after you send an email to yourself as a reminder to try the egg recipe tomorrow.

Paul Graham on how the App Store has hurt Apple’s reputation among developers. As John Gruber notes, here’s Graham’s coup-de-grace sentence: An organization that wins by exercising power starts to lose the ability to win by doing better work.

The Higgs boson is the grand prize for the LHC project, but other potential discoveries could be just as exciting and easier to prove. Like what? Supersymmetry, for example.

One of the most amusing blogs I have come across all year: Clients From Hell. Full of stories about unreasonable clients and their suffering designers/coders. I love stuff like this. Schadenfreude? Whatever. Just bring it on.

You go to a beach. You’re enjoying the day. This is not something you expect to see. (Irony alert: the ad YouTube showed me at the end of this clip is entitled ‘Overcome Your Fear of Flying’.)

To watch a Microsoft video regarding IE 9’s support for standards and interoperability, you are prompted to install Microsoft’s proprietary Silverlight (if you don’t have it installed already). Couldn’t make this up if I tried. (via DF)

Finally, a video of the 100 best quotes from The Wire.

Have a great weekend, everyone.

I have parsed every single page on the Internet this week and distilled the highlights, which means you don’t have to, because it takes a very long time. I selflessly bring this feature to this blog every Friday, primarily out of social altruism, but also because it gives me a legitimate reason to scour weird, primary-colored corners of the Internet while I’m here at work. Don’t tell anyone.

This week’s top fare, as decided by yours truly:

The new Chrome beta (Windows only, for now) is insanely fast.

The following is NOT from The Onion: Baguette dropped from bird’s beak shuts down the Large Hadron Collider. The LHC just can’t catch a break. Theory as to why? The Higgs-Boson is traveling back in time to prevent its own discovery. I am not making this up.

Steve Jobs named Fortune’s ‘CEO of the Decade’.

Birdhouse for Your Soul. A tremendous piece of writing by Gregg Knauss. You should go read it right now. Go. I’ll wait.

You back? OK, good. Verizon is doubling early termination fees, but it’s somewhat unclear if this is on all devices or its so-called ‘advanced’ devices.

Apple’s App Store crossed 100K apps this week. This is the most sophisticated form of device lock-in there is.

Google Dashboard. Cool because it gives you an easy op center for all of your Google services, and creepy because it highlights just how much Google knows about you.

Verizon Droid launches today. Here’s your complete guide to the early-adopter mayhem.

Speaking of Droid, here’s a side-by-side comparison of Droid and iPhone 3GS photos from Andy Ihnatko. Further proof that raw megapixels are not a slam-dunk indicator of image quality.

BBC’s Rory Cellan-Jones on a week with Windows 7. Key takeaway: the OS matters less than it once did.

Obsolete – an encyclopedia of once-common things passing us by.

I stepped into my garage this morning, and do you know what was not waiting for me? A new Subaru STI. Man, what gives?

Have a good weekend, everyone.
